On July 30, 2021, Blue Ocean Society will be partnering with The Concept Project for a new, unique event: The Garbage Swim. A team of lifeguards has pledged to swim the entire New Hampshire coast to increase awareness about marine debris in our ocean and raise funds for the Blue Ocean Society. This will be the first attempted continuous swim from Kittery, ME to Salisbury, MA. During the swim, Blue Ocean Society will host a full day of beach clean-ups to take action against marine debris. Six clean-ups are scheduled from Wallis Sands at 8:30 am to Salisbury at 7:30 pm. You can visit the link at the bottom of this page to sign up to join a clean-up.
The Idea for The Garbage Swim
The event was developed by Adrian Delli Colli, a lifeguard with the NH State Beach Patrol. Adrian and two of his friends formed The Concept Project when they decided they wanted to redefine how to build awareness around important issues. The group completes physical and mental challenges to spread awareness and raise funds for causes they feel passionate about.
Adrian and his team developed the idea for the “Garbage Swim” and approached us to see if we would be interested in participating and being the beneficiary. All proceeds from the event will go directly to support our many programs. When speaking with Adrian, he expressed how he is excited to spread our message because he feels compelled to take action on the important issue of ocean health and engage the community in the process.
About Our Beach Cleanups
We have been conducting beach clean-ups for over 20 years to combat and better understand marine debris in our ocean and the issues it poses. The survival of a whale or other marine animal is threatened when it ingests or becomes entangled in marine debris. Masses of plastic bags, ropes, and packaging materials found in the stomachs of beached whales are a somber reminder of the incredibly long lifespan of synthetic materials. We are excited to join The Concept Project in shedding more light on this troublesome issue by engaging the community with this unique event. We look forward to having you join us!
