Give the Gift of Sustainability: Upcycled Denim Whale Plushie

The holidays are just around the corner, and I’ve been searching for the perfect eco-friendly gift—something thoughtful, unique, and made without purchasing anything new. What better way to reduce waste than by creating a handmade gift that breathes new life into old materials?
Upcycling old denim into a handmade gift is a sustainable way to reduce waste while creating something unique. This year, as a nod to Blue Ocean Society’s mission to protect marine life in the Gulf of Maine, I crafted a Humpback whale plushie entirely from repurposed denim.

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial of how you can turn your worn-out jeans into a gift that’s not only adorable but also kind to our oceans:

Materials:

  • Old denim jeans (a couple of pairs for different shades and textures)
  • Fabric scraps (to create a fluke pattern)
  • Beads or buttons (for accents like eyes and barnacles)
  • Sewing needle and thread (or a sewing machine)
  • Stuffing material (like old pillow stuffing or fabric scraps)
  • Scissors
  • Pattern for whale plushie (hand-drawn or printed online)

Steps:

Create the Whale Shape
Draw or print a simple whale outline on a piece of paper. Your pattern should include a rounded body, pectoral fins (flippers), and a fluke (tail).

Prepare the Denim
Cut your old denim into manageable pieces. For contrast, use lighter denim for the belly and darker denim for the back. Mixing textures and shades gives your plushie depth and character.

Cut and Sew the Body
Pin your pattern to the denim and cut out the shapes.

Place the two body pieces (front and back) together, with the right sides facing in. Stitch along the edges, leaving a small gap for turning and stuffing.

Add Fins and Fluke
Cut smaller pieces of denim or fabric scraps for the fins and tail. Sew the fins onto the sides of the body, leaving a small gap for stuffing.

Turn and Stuff
Turn your whale plushie right-side out through the gap. Fill it with your stuffing material, ensuring it holds its shape.

Add Personality
Attach buttons or beads for eyes and barnacles. Add decorative stitches or lighter denim patches for extra charm.

Finishing Touches
Close the gap with a neat stitch, fluff your plushie, and reshape as needed. Your handmade whale is ready to make waves as a unique holiday gift!

With just a little time and creativity, you can craft a meaningful gift that’s as thoughtful as it is sustainable. Plus, it’s a great way to reduce waste, showcase your love for the ocean and marine life, and inspire others to think more sustainably during the holidays!

Happy crafting, and happy holidays!
