Welcome to our newest Adopt-a-Beach Feature, Cheryl Mazanec!
Cheryl owns Tides of Life SUP Yoga, a Maine-based, mobile small business that provides stand-up paddleboard yoga classes and yoga/paddle events each summer in Maine and NH. Tides of Life offers beginners and all-level classes. Cheryl also teaches yoga at a local gym and provides healthcare services in Kittery.
Cheryl says, “We, as an organization, love the Town of Kittery and wish to give back by offering monthly beach cleanups in Kittery Point.”
Cheryl’s Adopt-A-Beach Experience
Like our previous Adopt-a-Beach feature, I asked Cheryl some questions to get a feel for how her cleanups go, what she finds a lot, how these cleanups have changed her behavior, and more. Follow along to hear about Cheryl’s journey in adopting Seapoint Beach & Crescent Beach!
What beach have you adopted, and when did you adopt it?
We have adopted Seapoint Beach and Crescent Beach in Kittery Point. Seapoint was adopted in October 2020, and Crescent Beach summer of 2022.
Why did you choose to adopt a beach through Blue Ocean Society?
I have volunteered for Blue Ocean Society Beach Cleanups at other locations and feel passionate about their mission.
What item(s) do you find the most, and is it what you expected?
Plastic and rope from lobster pots. I thought we would pick up less than we do.
Have there been items you’ve found that you were surprised to see a lot of?
Yes, tiny plastic pieces.
What is the craziest/weirdest thing you’ve found?
Nothing too unusual.
Do you have a fun cleanup story to share?
I encourage the group to wear red and green coats or Santa hats each December to gather their Christmas spirit!
Has adopting this beach changed your behavior? Is there anything you do differently now?
Yes, it makes me appreciate the water and beaches we visit even more, and now I pick up debris every time I go to any beach.
Is there anything else you’d like to share in the blog post?
Giving back to our community enables us to help others and selflessly. As a result, we experience feelings of happiness, which brings more satisfaction to our lives.
We are so lucky to have Cheryl as part of our Adopt-a-Beach team for two years now. Her dedication to giving back to her community is admirable, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with Tides of Life! Thank you, Cheryl, for all your hard work!
Join Cheryl at her cleanups!
Cheryl’s cleanups are open to the public and she would love you to join her! Her next cleanup is this Saturday, December 3rd from 9 – 11 am.
Tides of Life cleanups are usually held on the first or second Saturday of every month from 9 – 11 am, meeting at Seapoint Beach. After you clean Seapoint Beach, you will move on to adjacent Crescent Beach with abuts Seapoint.
