Once upon a time, whales had legs! This talk will summarize the evolutionary history of cetaceans, describing their evolution from wolf-sized hoofed mammals in Pakistan to the majestic marine giants we know and love today, and explain how we unveiled this incredible story through fossil discoveries. Join us on a 50-million-year journey through time!

David is a Master’s student at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, studying fossil whales as a member of the Uhen Lab, a research group that specializes in the evolutionary history of cetaceans. He is also an avid fossil collector and a paleontology field collections volunteer for the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, MD. This past summer, he was a whale research intern for the Blue Ocean Society, working on the Granite State and gaining experience working with living whales and other marine life.
