It’s almost time for the New Hampshire Coastal Cleanup! This cleanup is held each fall in countries around the world. It was begun by the Ocean Conservancy 34 years ago, and New Hampshire has been involved in the cleanup for nearly that entire time. Become a part of this huge volunteer effort!
On Friday, September 20, hundreds of students will descend on local beaches to conduct cleanups as part of our Student Cleanup Day. Saturday, September 21 is the worldwide cleanup day, and we’ll have several cleanups open to the public (find them here). If you can’t join us during one of those days, don’t worry! You can also arrange a cleanup for your group of 10+ people anytime in September and October and it’ll still count toward the International Coastal Cleanup results!
An important aspect of this cleanup (along with the other 200+ cleanups we do throughout the year) is data collection. While we’re cleaning the beach, we’ll record our findings on data cards, and this information is combined with results from cleanups around the world to learn about trends in litter and provide insights into how to prevent future pollution.
Here are the top items collected last year:
There’s still plenty of time to enjoy the beach this year – we hope to see you at a cleanup soon!
